Migraine, Brain Fog and Dizziness — the Hormonal Connection

Neurological symptoms in women are frequently shaped by hormones, and frequently mislabelled. Recognising the pattern opens the door to targeted, effective help.

The brain and nervous system are profoundly influenced by hormones, and several common neurological symptoms in women are both under-recognised and very treatable. Migraine is around three times more common in women than men, and is often tied to the menstrual cycle — clustering around the period when estrogen falls, and frequently worsening in perimenopause. Treated as ordinary headaches, the hormonal pattern is missed and targeted prevention never offered; recognised, it can be managed far more effectively.

The 'brain fog' of perimenopause — word-finding difficulty, forgetfulness, and poor concentration — is another source of real distress, sometimes feared as early dementia. In most cases it is hormonally driven and improves with the right support, though it is always worth ruling out contributors such as thyroid problems, low B12 or iron, and depression.

Chronic dizziness and vertigo are also commonly labelled as 'just anxiety' when a treatable vestibular cause — such as vestibular migraine or benign positional vertigo — is responsible. Naming the pattern correctly is what makes effective treatment possible.

Symptoms worth paying attention to
  • 01Severe headaches that cluster around your period
  • 02Word-finding difficulty or forgetfulness in perimenopause
  • 03Recurrent dizziness, vertigo, or a 'rocking' sensation
  • 04Headaches or dizziness repeatedly attributed to anxiety alone
When to speak to a healthcare professional

If headaches track your cycle, or dizziness keeps recurring, it is worth describing the pattern and asking about hormonal or vestibular causes. Persistent 'brain fog' deserves checks for thyroid, B12, and iron alongside menopause assessment.
